“Only from the heart can you touch the sky.”
Jalal ad-Din Rumi
Room 21: Read Rumi
Today’s room comes to us courtesy of Rumi, the 13th Century Persian mystic, who was one of the world’s great spiritual poets.
Our room is simple: Read a few pages of Rumi before you go to bed each night. That’s it.
There are many translations of his poetry, but the ones from Coleman Barks are among the best, including “The Essential Rumi,” which is a great place to start.
Now, for many of us, myself included, reading poetry doesn’t come easy. It takes patience and a quiet mind. But, the payoff is great, especially when you’re talking about Rumi.
Stay with him long enough and it won’t be long before you find yourself transported to another world. His poetry is more than a glimpse into another room, it’s a glimpse into eternity.
“Knock, And He'll open the door
Vanish, And He'll make you shine like the sun
Fall, And He'll raise you to the heavens
Become nothing, And He'll turn you into everything.”
